Gallipoli

Taken from the name of the nearby Turkish village, Gelibolu, this was once the site of a tragic bloody World War I battle. Solders from many nations were involved in this pointless skirmish including Turkish, British, Australian, New Zealand, French, British Indian, Nepali, Newfoundland, plus more. Gallipoli witnessed over 130,000 casualties, with over 260,000 wounded. There are several memorials scattered across the peninsula, and this now serene area is more famous as the birthplace of the legendary ANZAC soldier.
