A central town located in the Izmir Province and just 2km north-east of the ancient city of Ephesus, Selcuk has a small population of just over 23,000, but it remains one of the most visited places in Turkey. Selcuk is the nearest town to the Ephesus ruins, Temple of Artemis, St. John’s Basilica and the Virgin Mary’s House. The Seljuk Turks named it Selcuk in 1375. Selcuk hosts an annual camel wrestling championship each winter.
