Sardis, once the ancient capital of Lydia is situated about 90 kilometres inland from the ruins of Ephesus. It was one of the greatest cities of the ancient world and is well known throughout the Christian world, as being one of the seven churches found in the book of Revelation. In the ruins you can visit the important Temple of Artemis, said to have been larger than the Parthenon in Athens, the synagogue and the impressively intact gymnasium.
