The stunning Turquoise Coast in Turkey’s southwest can only be described as stunning! The crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean are simply amazing, and are for everyone to enjoy. The ancient Lycians lived along this coastline as far back as 1250 BC, however in the region, there have been discoveries that prove life existed during the Bronze Age (3500 BC.) Lycia was officially the region between Fethiye and Antalya. Over time it changed hands many times, but more famously when Alexander the Great defeated the Persians and it was forced under Macedonian rule. In 168 BC the Lycian League was formed, which is also believed to be one of the first democracies. Allegedly the framers of the US Constitution were influenced by this league, which was subsequently dissolved in 43 AD. Today, ancient ruined cities can be found along the coastline, and the spectacular tombs carved from the mountain cliff-faces are also a highlight for visitors.
