Formerly known as Venessa, the small township of Avanos overlooks Turkey’s longest river, the Kizilirmak (Red River.) It is famous for its production of earthenware pottery, which dates back to the Hittite period. The rose-coloured clay used for pottery comes from the silt of the Red River.
