Edirne is a short drive west of Istanbul. Once the capital of the Ottoman Empire it is now a pleasant little town with interesting architecture and very few tourists. There are some beautiful examples of Ottoman design, especially in the Selimiye Mosque which was completed by the famous Mimar Sinan. The mosque is not the only drawcard for the town, there are also shops, bazaars, ancient caravanserays and beautiful old Ottoman homes scattered throughout the streets that add to the charm of the City so rich in history.
Edirne plays host to some interesting and colourful events throughout the year. The Hisrellez Festival held each spring, is a celebration of the waking of nature for the local Romany people. You will play witness to dancing in the streets, gypsies playing music and people jumping fires. Also in July one of the largest oil wrestling tournaments held throughout Turkey is carried out in Edirne. Considered the national sport, and one of th eldest sports in the world, this is quite a prestigious event to host and draws thousands in to witness.
