Sitting on the tip of the Sultanahmet peninsula, Topkapi Palace was home to many Sultans during the Ottoman reign. Dating as far back as 1465, the palace housed a large harem with secret passageways, too many sleeping quarters to count, as well as served as a venue for state occasions and royal entertainment. There is also said to be a strand of the prophet Mohammed’s beard within the compound, along with his cloak and sword. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
