Hagia Sopia

Completed in 360 AD, this magnificent structure was originally one of the most significant churches for 1093 years. What makes this building so remarkable, is its huge dome, which is said to have ‘changed the history of architecture'. It was the largest cathedral in the world for almost 1000 years. After Fatih Sultan Mehmet conquered Constantinople, it was transformed to a mosque, hence the minarets were constructed. After the demise of the Ottoman Empire, it was decided this wonderful piece of architecture should be converted to a museum, which was re-opened to the public in 1935.
