The Bodrum Castle dates back to the 14th Century when it was occupied by the Knights of Hospitaller, who were originally based in Rhodes. Ruled under Byzantine Constantinople, the castle was built like a true fortress in hope of holding out the Turkish besiegers. In 1522 when Suleyman the Magnificent conquered Rhodes the knights were forced to flee and it lay in the hands of the Ottoman Empire. The Castle is a prominent feature of Bodrum and is one of the best preserved monuments from medieval times.
