Mount Nemrut is a site worth waking up early for. A climb to its summit, to sit among the statues of the gods whilst watching the sun rise can be summarised as simply "unbelievable"! The King of Commagene, Antiochus I Theos, decided to build the colossal statues of himself, various gods and protective animals as a sign of gratitude to his ancestors who had gone before him and to his gods. He wanted his people, after his death, to be reminded of the command their gods had over them and to always show thanks. Built back in 62 B.C. in the Hellenistic period, the statues were later besieged by the The Romans and beheaded. Further attempts to demolish the statues completely failed and today we are all lucky enough to be able to visit these masterpieces of their time. Mount Nemrut is often referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World.
